Cruel World

Cruel World © Dave “Hedgehog” Mason 28 June 1992
The sergeant tells me, “Stand and Fight!” - The preacher says I’ve got my rights
Myself, I feel the dark night closing in…
Tell me - what is wrong, what is right? Are the answers in my dreams at night?
Why is it that we fight but never win?
‘Cause it’s a cruel, cruel world - for each helpless child – each boy and girl
For the timid and the sane, what is here for them to gain?
In this cruel, cruel world….
We swell with pride, we patriotize, the bugle sounds to teary eyes
The flag unfurls its memories of war….
I turn away – unsure, confused - I’m laughed at, sneered at, I stand accused
Yet can someone please explain what it’s all for?
‘Cause it’s a cruel, cruel world - for each helpless child – each boy and girl
For the blind, for those who see, must they die just to be free?
From this cruel, cruel world….
Stand up strong and be a man - oh, can’t they see or understand
I’m doing all I can just to make it through?
‘Cause in the end we all will die, why live a life that’s just a lie?
No-one’s going to cry for me or you
‘Cause it’s a cruel, cruel world - for each helpless child – each boy and girl
For the black, brown and the white, they gain nothing from the fight
In this cruel, cruel world….
No dreaming while your eyes are wide, no crying for the ones who have died
No listening to what you feel inside at all…
Just carry on, my warrior son - your life of hate has now begun
And peace will just cause your feet to turn and fall…
‘Cause it’s a cruel, cruel world, for each helpless child – each boy and girl
For the wealthy and the poor - death soon knocks upon our door
In this cruel, cruel world….

The Beer Slut

I’ve always tried behaving, I live a life that’s good
I listened to my ma and pa - my wife, just like I should
Alas, my favorite thing on earth that fills me up with cheer
Night or day, I have to say, I love an ice cold beer…
When I am on vacation I love to hike and swim
I paraglide, I scuba dive, I hang out on a limb
Now, there’s no better way to end a day so filled with fear
Than to find a bar and have a jar or three of ice cold beer…
I’d stay up late, drink a crate - still wake up feeling bright
Friends and I’d philosophy, we’d put the world to rights
A final one with the rising sun would start a brand new day
Just one cup of coffee and then I’d be on my way…
My doctor said the other day, “Dave, you’ve gotta stop
Drinking ANYTHING where the label even mentions the word “hops”
Your cholesterol is through the roof, your BP’s way too high
And if you don’t stop drinking beer I’m afraid that you might die…
Now, life ain’t ever easy, they say life can be a bitch
Once upon a time I thought my songs would make me rich
My wife is always on at me, her words falls on deafened ears
“Imagine how much we could save if you stopped drinking beers!”
Oh, I like beer, I like beer, oh, I like beer oh so much
Beer for Dave and Dave for beer - I’m really a beer slut
If you pity my affliction, you just lookee here
There’s nothing in this whole damn world quite like an ice cold beer!
I’m not getting younger, I’ll soon be 64
I remember Paul McCartney’s song from a hundred years before
My life’s been an adventure and if the end is drawing near
When it’s time to go, I’ll say, “I told you so!” and I’ll have an ice cold beer!

I’m heading east on 28, the sun is gold and blue the sky
This urban sprawl will soon abate - I’ll find the country by and by
Thirty miles of busy road, here’s my turning once again
Leave behind my heavy load, I’m on the road to Pleasant Plain (X2)
They say this used to be the school where teachers taught and children played
I’ve always thought it rather cool this school house never lost its way
We still share words, we still share songs, our voices raised in sweet refrain
Telling us that we belong, these old folk songs at Pleasant Plain (X2)
John and Vicky, awesome hosts
They’ll welcome you to share a meal
I can’t help but see the ghosts
In the rafters, in the corners and I know just how they feel…
The warm glows of the setting sun leave dying embers in the sky
They guide me on towards my home - I know I’ll be there by and by
There’s a fire burning in my soul, I still feel the music in my veins
Great times, good friends - may it never end out here in Pleasant Plain
Great times, good friends - I hope it never end out here in Pleasant Plain

Songwriter's Eyes

Songwriter’s Eyes Dave “Hedgehog” Mason
I was in the Air Force when I learned to play guitar
Soon, people said, “Hey, this guys good! I bet you he’ll go far!”
The anecdotal remedies I’d write to make them smile
So they’d forget about the humdrum and be happy for a while
I’d make them laugh, I’d make them cry and I’d make them realize
That life ain’t really all that bad when seen thru this young songwriter’s eyes…
I felt just like a fraud while I was out there having fun
My friends all worked their 9-5’s while I was just a bum
Searching for that special song the world would want to hear
Put some money in my bank account maybe get me out of here
I would laugh, I would cry and sometimes I’d realize
That life ain’t really all that bad when seen thru this young songwriter’s eyes…
If I had just believed in me, seen what others could not see
If I’d stayed true to my destiny, been a little more headstrong
But, if’s a double edged sword and indecision best ignored
When searching for the magic chord to start that perfect song…
The years went flying by me, I stopped playing guitar
I tried to be a banker, once, with a “B” as in bizarre
I learned to take the humdrum with an effervescent smile
But there was always something missing I could never reconcile
I couldn’t laugh, inside I’d cry until the day I realized
That life ain’t really all that bad when seen thru this old songwriter’s eyes…

Guns or needles, bright young people should not end up dead
Doctor Freud loved opioids - oh, how we’ve been misled?
Alcohol now protocol but it goes right to my head
I think I’d better spend my day in bed…
Could it be reality’s not something I can face?
I live and breathe in make believe to survive this human race
These bitter tears of doubt I fear will bring death’s cold embrace
Whatever happened to Amazing Grace?…
CH: Coz all I know is what I know and what I know is this
I can live in ignorance coz ignorance is bliss
If I choose to sing the blues would I be remiss
When I have to think we’re worth much more than this….
No solution to pollution, Mother Nature’s fall
Moral free technology is writing on the wall
Lunatics in politics - another great curve ball
9-1-1 won’t even take your call…
Now, misery loves company but three can be a crowd
Honesty’s the policy that makes the world go round
Friends in need are friends indeed until they bring you down….
TV screen celebrities are feeding my disease
Poisoning my reasoning with appetizing ease
But, anything tastes wonderful with bacon and grilled cheese
Another margarita, barman, please…
CH: add…..
I have to think there’s more to life than this….
Please tell me that we’re worth much more than this….

How Can A Man
05:04
|
|
||
When a man loses all that he owns, when his loved ones are gone
In a storm tossed and blown, when he’s old and alone
Wishing he could go home - How Can A Man?
When day after day is the same, when it’s pouring with rain
His dreams washed down the drain, when there’s nothing but pain
In a world gone insane - How Can A Man?
How can a man face the future? How can a man even try?
When everything he once believed in, is nothing but tears in his eyes?
When a man can be falsely accused, as a child be abused
Be insulted (molested), misused, when love leaves him bruised
Unsure and confused - How Can A Man?
When fate, what lies in the stars, truth looked for in bars
Leaves him on the cold tar with invisible scars
When sympathy jars - How Can A Man?
How can a man be upstanding? How can he ever feel proud?
When the weight of his fears on his shoulders leaves him battered and bowed?
When a man is thrown out, dispossessed, when he’s made to feel less
Than his absolute best, when he’s cursed and oppressed
With no means to protest - How Can A Man?

Wunderbar!

Wunderbar! Dave “Hedgehog” Mason
In northern Kentucky by the great Ohio,
The German folk settled here decades ago
There’s a funky “Bierstube” where I like to go
Where the food’s always good and the beers always flow…
The bar’s always busy, there’s a crowd every night
They cook real German dinners and they cook them just right
And kids bring their parents who show their delight
What a thing to behold - it’s a wonderful sight…
Wunderbar, Wunderbar - everyone knows, a place for a party where the beer always flows
(1) When it’s late in the evening and we’re all comatose…..
(2) When it’s late in the evening you can take off your clothes….
Wundebar, Wunderbar - that’s how life goes…
Burgers and Bratwurst, Kartoffel Salat
Sauerkraut and pretzels that won’t make you fat
Und effery Tuesday - wear your best cowboy hat
Und come down und listen to Songwriters’ Night…
Barbie, the barmaid, she’s rushed off her feet
The guys in the kitchen have turned up the heat
Grab your drink, get your order in, then take a seat
’Cause Pat’s playing guitar and you’re in for a treat….
Now, falling in love 'neath the glorious full moon
Like meat, beer and music can make a man swoon
So, head down to Lee Street you’ll find out real soon
There is NO PLACE like ZIS PLACE to hear a good tune…
Wunderbar, Wunderbar - vot’s in a name? So many imposters but none quite the same
A peaceful oasis in a world gone insane… Wunderbar, Wunderbar - come back again!

Toffee © Dave “Hedgehog” Mason 9/9/19
Toffee’s gone away
You would have loved my good friend, Toffee, if I was
down or skies were grey
She’d lift me up much more than coffee ever could
I’m gonna miss her good…
CH: Fly, dear Toffee, fly….to that big kennel in the sky.…
Her cute, lopsided grin
And the way she’d try to talk to me, oh
How can I begin
To explain just what she meant to me? I’ll cry
If I have to try…
CH: Fly, dear Toffee, fly …… you are still here in my mind’s eye…
Refrain: Some say that life’s unfair
Some say true love will last eternally
Your love was mine to share
But all things come to pass eventually…
There’s an empty space just there
Where she used to sleep upon the kitchen floor
By my favorite chair
Looking out the open back door - Toffee, fly
I hate to say goodbye…

No Place Like Home
03:37
|
|||
From Ennis in Montana to Ennis, County Clare
Around the world and back again I tell you, I’ve been there
From Paris in Kentucky to the capital of France
You’ve got to see these places if you ever get the chance…
From Delhi, Cincinnati to the magic Taj Mahal
Around the world and back again I wish I’d seen them all
From Lima in Ohio down to Lima in Peru
Like a modern era Paddington I wanna see these places too…
Refrain: At the end of the day there is no place like home
New Orleans, Ucluelet, Copenhagen, Rome
They say that home is where the heart is, my heart is always there
Wherever good friends gather home can be ‘bout anywhere
If whiskey is your tipple you might take the Bourbon Trail
A Frenchman might stand open-mouthed if he stumbled on Versailles
Folk in Glasgow, Scotland fair amused would be to hear
That their namesake in Kentucky is a town that has no beer…
Around the world in eighty days in a magical balloon
May sound like an adventure but the trip would end too soon
If I could find the time it takes to find the time I need
To realize the whole wide world is waiting there for me….

The Junkman
05:26
|

The Junkman © Dave “Hedgehog” Mason 27 Oct. 1987
Don’t follow the junkman though he wants to hold your hand
He’ll take away your inhibitions then leave you so that you can’t stand
And he won’t be around to pick you up again
Cause he may be lots of things to you but he’s no friend
Try to see it now don’t wait until the end
The funky junkman is death warmed up and you’re the fire!
Don’t follow the junkman, don’t let him spin his tales
He’ll let the warm wind of illusion come and fill your sails
When the storm breaks, he won’t be around to help you through
When you’re drowning he won’t give advice on what to do
He’ll just stand there on the water and he’ll laugh at you
The funky junkman is death warmed up and he’s a liar.
I tell you this story because once I knew a girl
Flesh of my own flesh - such a precious little pearl
Until the funky junkman came and pried her shell wide open
He laughed and he ridiculed until her mind was broken
Until the only truth she knew were all the lies he had spoken
He took her down underground when she said, “Take me higher!”
Don’t follow the junkman, though others do the same
Like a god he’ll try to tell you there is power in his name
But the only power here is going to break apart
The love within your family, within your heart
Until collapsing in your misery you wonder how’d it start
You can run from him forever but he’ll never tire.
Don’t follow the Junkman, don’t let him take you in
You may think you are strong enough but you can never win
When the funky junkman plays, he never keeps the rules
Though you think you’re very clever - well, he just plays with fools
While you are succumbing he just stands there and he drools
He’ll destroy your life completely - that’s his heart’s desire.
